Genesis 1:1 | God Made Everything (Creation Overview)

Lesson Overview for ADULTS

Genesis 1:1 is the very first verse in the Bible and introduces us to God as the Creator of all things. This foundational verse tells us that before anything existed, God was already there, and He chose to create the heaven and the earth. The word “beginning” doesn’t refer to when God started existing, but rather to the beginning of creation itself, as God has always existed. This verse establishes God’s power and authority over all creation.

BUILDING BLOCK CREATIONS

Items Needed

  • Legos or Duplo Blocks

Set out various colored Legos and Duplo blocks. All children to create whatever they want from their imaginations. At the start of class, ask them to explain their creations. Explain that just like their creation didn’t exist before the built it, the world didn’t exist before God made it. Our Bible verse today is about that very thing. Today kicks off several weeks of studying together how God made the world and everything in it.

CREATION FOLDER/COLORING PAGE

Items Needed

Children who finish early can begin coloring the cover and first page of their Creation Coloring Book and/or decorating the folder. The folder/coloring book will not go home with them until the conclusion of this entire study. We will add new pages each week.

BIBLE GAME, STORY, & CRAFT 6:40-7:10 p.m.

BIBLE GAME: CREATION MEMORY CIRCLE

Materials Needed:

  • Whiteboard
  • Dry Erase Markers

Children sit in a circle. Start by saying “In the beginning, God created heaven and earth.”
The first child adds “And God made…” (something specific like “trees”).
The next child repeats the phrase and adds their own item: “And God made trees and flowers.”
Continue around the circle, with each child repeating all previous items and adding one new thing God created. Help younger children remember the sequence.
Celebrate how many different things God made!

Note: You can write the items on the whiteboard if you want to to help with memory. Consider drawing pictures instead of words for preschool kids.

Bible Lesson

Items Needed

Start by asking kids where to find the story in the Bible.

  • What is the first book of the Bible? Genesis
  • Which part of the Bible is Genesis in? Old Testament

The Bible tells us that “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth.” Let’s practice that verse together. (Repeat it several times in parts with motions).

Setup: Use a felt board as your “creation space” and have the felt pieces ready for each kid to bring up. (Preset them around the circle and ask them to bring theirs up to the board as we talk about it).

Day 1: Light and Dark

“On the first day, God said ‘Let there be light!’ and there was light!”

  • “God made bright, shiny light! Can you shine like the sun?” (Children stretch arms up and wiggle fingers)
  • Show black fabric: “God also made darkness for nighttime when we sleep. Can you close your eyes like it’s nighttime?” (Children close eyes)
  • “God saw that the light was good! He called the light ‘day’ and the darkness ‘night.'”

Day 2: Sky and Water

“On the second day, God made the sky – the beautiful blue space above us! Can you point to the sky?” (Children point up)

  • “God separated the water above from the water below. The sky is like a big blanket that protects us!”
  • “Can you spread your arms wide like the big sky?” (Children stretch arms wide)

Day 3: Land and Plants

“On the third day, God made dry land appear!”

  • “God made the earth – the ground we walk on! Can you stomp on the earth?” (Children stomp)
  • Green fabric: “Then God said, ‘Let plants grow!’ and they did!”
  • Add small trees, flowers, grass: “God made big trees, pretty flowers, and green grass. Can you grow like a tall tree?” (Children start small and stretch up tall)

Day 4: Sun, Moon, and Stars

“On the fourth day, God made lights in the sky!”

  • Sun: “God made the bright sun to shine during the day! Can you make a big circle with your arms like the sun?” (Children make circle overhead)
  • Moon: “God made the moon to glow at night!” (Show crescent shape with arms)
  • Stars: “And tiny twinkling stars! Can you twinkle your fingers like stars?” (Children wiggle fingers)

Day 5: Fish and Birds

“On the fifth day, God filled the water and sky with living things!”

  • Fish: “God made fish to swim in the water! Can you swim like a fish?” (Children make fish face and move hands like a fish tail)
  • Birds: “God made birds to fly in the sky! Can you flap your wings like a bird?” (Children flap arms)
  • Add different birds: “God made birds that chirp and sing!”

Day 6: Animals and People

“On the sixth day, God made animals and people!”

  • “God made animals that walk on the land!”
  • Add animals one by one: “Can you roar like a lion? Hop like a bunny? Stomp like an elephant?” (Children act out each animal)
  • “Then God made the very first people – Adam and Eve!”
  • “God made people special. He made you special too!”

Day 7: Rest

“On the seventh day, God rested. He looked at everything He made and said it was VERY good!”

  • “Can you lie down and rest like God did?” (Children lie down briefly)
  • “God was finished creating. Everything was perfect!”

Repeat the memory verse again “In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth. Genesis 1:1”.

Craft: Creation Story Bag

Items Needed

Children decorate their paper bags by gluing blue tissue paper on the upper half (heaven) and coloring the lower half brown or green (earth). They glue cotton balls as clouds in the heaven section. Inside the bag, they place cut-out pictures of things God created. They should glue the memory verse on the back of the bag. At home, they can reach into their “creation bag” and pull out items while saying “God made this!”
