LESSON OVERVIEW FOR ADULTS
In Luke 4:16–21, Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah in the synagogue and declares, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” This moment marks the beginning of His public ministry and reveals that He is the long-awaited Savior who brings good news, healing, freedom, and favor. Jesus boldly identifies Himself as the fulfillment of prophecy, showing that God’s promises are trustworthy and timely.
In Isaiah 61:1–2, the prophet speaks of one anointed by the Spirit to bring hope to the poor, bind up the brokenhearted, and proclaim liberty. These promises pointed forward to Jesus. For young children, this lesson is an opportunity to plant the idea that Jesus was sent by God to help people and show God’s love in real and powerful ways, even long ago promises came true in Him.

BIBLE STORY 10:50–11:00
Where is this found in the Bible? Luke
Is this in the Old Testament or New Testament? New Testament
Story:
Jesus went to church like we do. It was His turn to read God’s Word. He was handed a a big scroll and read a very old promise from Isaiah. The promise said that someone would come to help people, to love them, and to tell the good news. Then Jesus said, “I am the one this promise is about!” Jesus is the helper God promised. He is our good news!
Theological Questions:
- Who did Jesus say the scroll was talking about? (Himself)
- What kind of people did Jesus come to help? (Poor, sad, hurt, and lost people)
Life Application Questions:
- Can we share good news like Jesus did? (Yes!)
- How can we help someone who is sad? (Give a hug, pray, listen)
Prayer:
Jesus, thank You for being the good news. Help us love others like You did. Amen.
BIBLE STORY GAME 11:00–11:15 | Scroll Search
Items Needed
- Scrolls
- Prize box
Hide the rolled up scrolls around the room. Children search for them. As they find them, have them unroll them and have an adult read what they say. Discuss what they mean and how they relate to what our Bible story told us.
Optional: A few of the scrolls will have “Prize Box” written on them. Children who find one of those scrolls get to pick something out of the prize box.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE – KJV
Luke 4:16–21
“And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
Isaiah 61:1–2
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”
