Genesis 1:20-23 | (Day 5) God Creates Fish and Birds

Lesson Overview for ADULTS

In Genesis 1:20-23, we see God’s creativity displayed on the fifth day of creation. After preparing the perfect environment with sky, water, and plant life, God filled the waters with countless sea creatures and the skies with beautiful birds. This passage reveals God’s attention to detail and His infinite imagination as He created everything from the tiniest microscopic sea life to the largest whales, from delicate songbirds to mighty eagles.

The timing of creation shows God’s perfect planning. He made habitats before inhabitants, ensuring every creature would have what it needed to thrive. God didn’t create just one or two types of each animal, but filled the seas with teeming life and the skies with diverse birds. Each creature was made with the wonderful ability to reproduce “after their kind,” continuing God’s blessing of life throughout generations. When God saw everything He had made on this day, He declared it good, showing His pleasure in the beauty and diversity of His creation.

BIBLE STORY 6:50-7:00

Question 1: Where is this found in the Bible? (Genesis)
Question 2: Is this in the Old Testament or New Testament? (Old Testament)

God was making something very special – the whole world! He had already made light and dark, the sky and water, and dry land with beautiful plants. Everything was ready for day five!

On day five, God said, “Let the water be filled with living things!”

God made SO many different fish – big fish, little fish, colorful fish, and plain fish. He made whales that are as big as school buses and tiny fish smaller than your thumb! God filled the oceans, rivers, and lakes with swimming creatures.

But God wasn’t done yet! He also said, “Let birds fly in the air!”

God made birds with beautiful feathers, strong wings, and different shaped beaks. Some birds sing pretty songs, some birds are tiny like hummingbirds, and some birds are big like eagles!

God made sure every fish could swim perfectly and every bird could fly just right. He gave them everything they needed – fish got fins and gills, birds got wings and feathers. And guess what? God told all the fish and birds to have babies so there would always be more fish swimming and more birds flying!

When God looked at all the fish and birds He had made, He said, “This is very good!”

Theological Questions:

  1. Who made all the fish and birds? (God did!)
  2. What day did God make the fish and birds? (Day five)

Life Application Questions:

  1. How do you think God felt when He made all these beautiful creatures? (Happy and proud)
  2. What’s your favorite fish or bird that God made? (Allow various answers)

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for making so many wonderful fish and birds. Help us remember that You created everything beautiful around us. Amen.
