Genesis 1:2-5 | (Day 1) God Creates Light

Lesson Overview for ADULTS

In Genesis 1:2-5, God creates the universe, beginning with light on the first day of creation. God speaks the powerful words “Let there be light,” separating it from darkness and establishing the first day and night. This was not the sun’s light because the sun was not created until the fourth day. This was a special light from a source only God knew.

This passage reveals God’s creative power through His spoken word, demonstrating His authority over all creation. The repetition of “God saw that it was good” establishes a pattern of divine satisfaction with His work that continues throughout the creation narrative. God spoke, and light appeared.

BIBLE GAME: Creation Light Hunt

Materials Needed:

  • Flashlights
  • Yellow wooden blocks or foam blocks (8-10 pieces)
  • White cotton balls (15-20 pieces)
  • Yellow pom-poms, various sizes (12-15 pieces)
  • White paper circles (cut from cardstock, 10-12 pieces)
  • Yellow plastic Easter eggs (4-6 pieces)
  • Large basket or container labeled “Creation Collection”

Hide yellow and white objects around the room before class. Start with lights dimmed or off. Give each child a flashlight to use. Tell children that before God spoke, everything was dark and empty. Then God said, “Let there be light!” and there was light. Have kids hunt for the hidden “light” objects in the dark using their flashlights. When they find an object, they bring it to the “Creation Collection” basket. Once all items are found, count them together and celebrate God’s amazing light!

Teaching Connection: Just like the children had to search with their lights to find the hidden objects, God’s light reveals and creates wonderful things that weren’t there before!

BIBLE STORY

ITEMS NEEDED

  • Bible
  • Felt Board
  • Felt Pieces for Day 1

Begin with a completely dark room. Ask children, “What do you see? Can you see anything?” Then turn on the lights and say, “Let there be light!”.

Our Bible Verse today teaches us about Day 1 of Creation.

Start by asking kids where to find the story in the Bible.

  • What is the first book of the Bible? Genesis
  • Which part of the Bible is Genesis in? Old Testament

Genesis 1:1-5 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.”

Turn the lights off again. Use a large flashlight to demonstrate light pushing away darkness. Shine it around the room and explain how when God spoke, light immediately appeared and pushed away all the darkness.

Give each child a glow stick. Let them practice saying “Let there be light!” as the break it to make it glow. Emphasize that God didn’t need a flashlight or a glow stick. He just spoke and light appeared!

Teaching Points:

  • God is more powerful than anything – He just spoke and light came!
  • God made light and it was good
  • God gave us day for playing and working, and night for sleeping
  • God made everything with a purpose

Questions:

  • What did God say to make the light appear? (Let there be light)
  • What are the two things God made on the first day? (Day and night or Light and Dark)
  • When do we see the light God made?
  • Can you say what God said? “Let there be light.”

Closing: Have all children hold their glow sticks say “Let there be light” three times.

Craft: Light and Dark Coffee Filter Suns (11:00-11:15 a.m.)

Items Needed:

  • White coffee filters
  • Yellow and orange washable markers
  • Spray bottles with water
  • Black construction paper cut into circles
  • Glue sticks
  • Memory Verse Cards

Give each child a coffee filter and yellow/orange markers. Have them color the coffee filter heavily with yellow and orange (the more color, the better). Lightly spray the coffee filter with water and watch the colors spread and blend. While filters dry, give each child black circle. Have them glue the memory verse on the back of it. Glue the colorful coffee filter (representing God’s light) onto the black paper (representing darkness). (Children may need to take the coffee filter and construction paper home and finish the craft at home).
