Genesis 4:1–16, 25 | Giving Our Best to God (Cain and Abel)

LESSON OVERVIEW FOR ADULTS

Genesis 4 tells the story of Cain and Abel, the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Both brothers brought offerings to God, but their hearts were very different. Abel gave God his best (the firstborn of his flock) while Cain’s offering lacked the same devotion. God was pleased with Abel’s gift because it came from a heart of worship, but He was not pleased with Cain’s offering. When Cain became jealous and angry, God warned him about sin crouching at his door, but Cain gave in to that sin and killed his brother Abel.

This lesson teaches preschoolers that God wants us to give Him our best, not just our things, but our hearts. When we love God, we want to honor Him with our actions, our obedience, and our worship. Children will learn that giving to God isn’t about being perfect, but about having a heart that loves Him and wants to please Him. They’ll also see that jealousy and anger hurt others and displease God, but He always gives us a chance to choose what’s right.

PLAY ROOM 10:15–10:30

Children will be dropped off in the playroom between 10:15–10:30 a.m. Allow them to play freely as they arrive. Transition them to the classroom at 10:30 a.m.

OPENING ACTIVITY 10:30–10:45 | Best Gift “Mismatch Memory”

Items Needed

Use this activity to gently introduce the idea that God cares about what’s in our hearts when we give. Place the cards upside down and let kids try to find the “Mismatched” version of each item. Then ask them which one is good and which one is not good (which one they would give to God as the best and which one they shouldn’t give to God).

WORSHIP IN SONG 10:45–10:55

PRAYER 10:55–11:05

Gather children in a circle and say: “Let’s talk to God together. We can tell Him we want to give Him our best today.”

Pray: “Dear God, thank You for loving us so much. Help us to give You our best—our best love, our best obedience, and our best worship. We want to honor You with everything we do. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Let children pray around the circle as they feel led.

BIBLE STORY 11:05–11:15

Where is this found in the Bible: Old Testament
What book: Genesis

After Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden, they had two sons. The older brother was named Cain, and the younger brother was named Abel. [Hold up two fingers.] Cain grew food from the ground like fruits and vegetables. Abel took care of sheep.

One day, both Cain and Abel wanted to give a gift to God. Abel chose the very best lamb from his flock—the firstborn, the most special one. [Pause.] Abel loved God so much, and he wanted to give God his very best!

Cain also brought a gift to God. He brought some of the food he had grown. But the Bible doesn’t say Cain gave his best. [Shake your head.] Maybe he just grabbed whatever was easiest. God could see what was in Cain’s heart.

[Ask the children:] Do you think God was happy with Abel’s gift? [Let them respond: “Yes!”] That’s right! God was pleased with Abel because Abel gave his very best with a loving heart.

But God was not pleased with Cain’s gift. [Shake your head gently.] God could see that Cain’s heart wasn’t right. Cain didn’t give his best, and he didn’t really love God the way he should.

Cain got very, very angry. His face looked mad, and he felt jealous of his brother Abel. [Make an angry face.] God saw Cain’s anger and said, “Cain, why are you angry? If you do what is right, you will be accepted. But if you don’t, sin is crouching at your door like a wild animal, ready to jump on you. You must rule over it.”

[Ask the children:] Do you think Cain listened to God? [Let them respond.]

No, he didn’t. [Shake your head sadly.] Cain let his anger and jealousy take over. He asked Abel to go out to the field with him, and when they were alone, Cain hurt Abel. Cain killed his own brother. [Pause.]

That made God very sad. God came to Cain and asked, “Where is your brother Abel?”

Cain lied and said, “I don’t know. Am I supposed to take care of my brother?”

But God knows everything. [Point up.] God said, “What have you done? Your brother’s blood is crying out to Me from the ground. You will be punished, Cain. The ground will not grow food for you anymore, and you will wander far away.”

Cain was very sad because of what he had done. He left and went far away from God’s presence. But God still protected Cain so no one would hurt him.

Later, Adam and Eve had another son. They named him Seth. [Smile.] God blessed them with another child, and Seth loved God.

[Close your Bible and look at the children.]

Boys and girls, God wants us to give Him our very best—not just our toys or our things, but our hearts. When we love God, we obey Him, we worship Him, and we treat others with kindness. God doesn’t want us to be jealous or angry like Cain. He wants us to have loving hearts like Abel.

BIBLE CRAFT 11:15–11:30 | “My Best for God” Heart Man

Items Needed

Precut out the heart man template. Let each child color the heart and attach the legs. Then have children take turns picking a heart from a ziplock bag off the wall. The child should hand each kid a heart while you discuss what the heart says and how it helps them give their best to God. The hearts are glued to his leg.

SNACK TIME & BIBLE STORY VIDEO 11:30–11:40

Serve a simple snack such as crackers and juice or fruit slices. While children eat, play a short, age-appropriate video retelling the story of Cain and Abel. Look for versions that emphasize giving God our best and having a loving heart. Keep the video gentle and appropriate for preschoolers.

BIBLE STORY GAME 11:40–11:55 | Best Offering Relay

Items Needed

  • Two baskets or bins
  • Piles of stuffed animals or plastic toys
  • Tape to mark a starting line

Divide children into two teams. Place a basket at one end of the room for each team. Give each team a pile of toys “offerings” at the starting line.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE | Genesis 4:1-16, 25 (ESV)

Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.” And again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a worker of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”

Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to me from the ground. And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth.” Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him. Then Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
