In his message today at Trinity Baptist Church, Pastor Andy Coats discussed how unhealthy relationships will destroy our spiritual life. They are like a virus 🦠… they infect our actions, our conversations, our thoughts, and put us in a position of compromise.
The secret to a healthy spiritual life is to have healthy relationships with the Lord and with others. The transforming work of Jesus in your life should change your circle of friends and your circle of influence.

4 Types of Toxic People to Your Spiritual Health
- Those Who Dictate
Are you part of the problem? Is someone controlling you instead of Jesus? If someone else is dictating your direction and your life, they are keeping you form serving others and controlling your circle of influence. - Those Who Distract
Relationships that keep you distracted on anything other than what God has called you to do are not healthy. If your friends are calling you to do anything other than God’s purpose, they’re not your real friends. - Those Who Discourage
The enemy wants you defeated. Discouragement is not a fruit of the spirit. We need encouragers who will point us to Jesus. If Satan can’t defeat you, he will defeat someone else. And their defeat will defeat and discourage you. - Those Who Demean
Even if it is just in just, when people demean you, you will start to view your own identity as what they’ve said about you instead of as a person of God. There are people who tear us down to feel better about themselves.
3 Ways to Recover from Unhealthy Relationships
- Restore the Relationship
Address the problem and seek restoration. - Redeem the Relationship
Reposition yourself within the relationship. - Recover the Relationship
Distance yourself from negative relationships.
In all aspects of recovering unhealthy relationships, it is important to show God’s love. Always leave room to encourage the other person.
